Hi Andrew,
Thanks very much for that. I've attempted to install the HSO packages but unfortunately I'm running 64bit Ubuntu and they're only 32bit apps so they won't install. I've contacted the site to see if they have any advice.

Hi Craig,
No need to switch to the Windows env, I can see what the problem is from the Vendor/Product IDs you gave. You have an Option embedded module which I think is GTM 378. From the product ID I can see that the device was shipped in, what is referred to in the Windows world as, NDIS mode. There is a driver available for Linux called 'HSO' it's already in later distributions such as Ubuntu Intrepid, and available as an add on from www.pharscape.org . Unfortunately this device works as if it is an Ethernet interface and so doesn't slot in well with traditional dialer type applications such as VMC, wvdial or KPPP etc. Supporting it is something we are considering for inclusion, but it's not a quick modification to do it. There is a tool called HSOconnect also available from pharscape.

It sounds like you have two problems;
Firstly we need to find out what device the internal module is;
1/ You might have a look in Windows and see how it is described. Manufacturer & product id are good
2/ In Linux, make sure all external USB devices are removed, then do 'lsusb', then do lsusb -v. Capture all output and post here.
Secondly since VMC is not recognising the device, as you have found, your only choice is to manually configure the device. I have seen problems with that form before showing the issue you describe, but if we can make VMC recognise the device properly your issue there should go away.

I don't know anyone in our team who has that model of machine to test out. In fact nobody in the UK team have tested the package on any machine that has an internal card.
You could open a terminal window on your machine and type:
/user/home> vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux-debug
cut'n'paste the output on the terminal window into the forum post for some of our guys to have a look.
I don't know how the internal modem presents it's self to the kernal so it may be something we will not have the resources to fix! :-( ...

Hi,
Was just wondering if anyone else using Ubuntu 8.10 uses the E172 sim INSIDE their laptops as opposed to the USB device it comes with from Vodofone? When I have it installed internally and run the 2.0.beta3 mobile connect card driver for Linux I get a device selection screen that only has "Custome device settings" highlighted and a "Device type" of "Serial" available with a speed connection of 115200, so I can't move on.
Using the network manager, I can set up the connection but can't connect.
If I use the E172 in the USB stick then I can connect either way.
My laptop is dual boot, WinXP and Ubuntu 8.10. I can use the E172 internally with no problems with WinXP but I want to move to Ubuntu permanently if I can. This is the only major problem I have at the moment.
I suppose what I need to know is, is this a "Vodafone software not detecting a modem" issue or a Sony configuration issue? I'm using a Sony Z11VN.
Regarding Nicholas' question about the Linux app availability, my vote would be for the set up of a repository address for a download package which we could then install and keep updated easiliy as with most other important apps, via the package manager.
