The application has been developed to support a South African shack dwellers' social movement.
This 'social movement' represents communities in Durban, Cape Town and Gauteng. This
organisation has been established to protect members from endemic violence and provide support
regarding access to housing and services.
Members of the 'social movement' know that they are part of a ‘support structure’. They often go to
their leadership, which is elected by them, when they need something. If there is an emergency,
they know they can contact the 'social movement' office directly and they will receive support. This
is done either through mobile usage or face to face.
The activists, included leadership and members, said that after joining the 'social movement' their
phone usage increased. This was as a result of engaging in 'social movement' related activities:
➔mobilization of members
➔information dissemination
➔management of crisis events
