Code X
Code X - NIMBLE Software - Broadcast via QR Codes
INTRODUCTION
NIMBLE Software is a solo, one man effort run by developer and humanist Gregory G Smith from Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa as registered non profit & has a track record for environmentalism within the community extending to it's founding in 2006. Starting aims focused on pro-social participation of local residents in environmental affairs but it widened to include technology and designs aimed at improved livelihoods of not only local Nelson Mandela Bay residents and/or a strict definition of the environment.
Code X CONCEPT
Code X is a project entirely designed by NiMBLE and integrates existing services into a low tech network for large-scale distribution of information.
Initially designed as a tool to spread environmental tips and updates the project has evolved into a sustainable livelihood broadcaster covering security, health and other vital information.
Using free and simple QR Codes and Wiki online web resources, information is literally 'broadcast' to everyone able to point a camera phone at a black and white barcode and click.
An analysis of the ubiquity of J2ME application use on relatively inexpensive, entry level Java mobile phones in Africa bolsters confidence in the future success of Code X.
[There are almost 30 million mobile users in South Africa. The most popular handsets are: Nokia N70, Nokia N73, Nokia 6300, Sony Ericsson K750i, BlackBerry 8310, Nokia 6233, Nokia 6600, Samsung E250, Sony Ericsson W810i, Nokia 530]
Furthermore, the importance of current(real-time and near real-time) local information in community policing, crime related security and health & ecology security are squarely covered by the design of Code X.
Code X fits under these headings:
- early warning notifications of criminal activity, violence or other security threats
- assistance for families, communities at risk of crime
- reducing crime, preventing the spread of violence
- location, identification and assistance of victims of violence or crime
