Software Package Manager Setup for the Toshiba NB-100

Software Package Manager Setup for the Toshiba NB-100

The Toshiba NB-100 Ultra Mobile PC comes pre-installed with the Synaptic, a Software Package Management system. Here you will find easy instructions on how to add the Betavine Software repository to your package management system.

This application will also work on Netbooks running Ubuntu Netbook Remix and follows the exact same steps.

This will also allow you to get updates of new Software versions when they become available.

The process follows three steps:

number one

Starting Synaptic

number two

Adding Betavine

number three

Instalation

Starting Synaptic

To start Synaptic using the Toshiba NB-100 you need to start a terminal window by selecting 'terminal' from the home screen which is center right on the Accessories tab:

Select-> Accessories -> Terminal ->

Ubuntu Remix -> Accessories -> Terminal

The Synaptic client application must be run with administration privilege, known as 'root' privillages. To do this run with the sudo command and the application name. Ensure to have a "space" character between both commands. Hence from your command line type:

/:>sudo synaptic

Adding Betavine to your repository

The 'synaptic package manager' will start showing a list of software packages that you can install on your machine. The left column will display packages by 'group'.

We need to configure the package manager to let it find the Betavine packages.

From the Synaptic menu select menu 'settings' and submenu 'repositories'

This will launch a tabed configuration box, select the 'Third Party Software' tab. This will show a list of URI's already configured on your system. You have to add the betavine URI.

To do this, select the 'Add' button.

The Add URI dialogue box shows a single entry field that you need to fill. The Betavine repository has been setup as a 'trival' repository. Hence add the following exactly:

Type:"deb http://www.betavine.net/repo/debian/dists/hardy/ UbuntuRemix/"

Select OK to confirm your selection.

Please note, there is a 'space' character between the URL and UbunutuRemix/.

Installing Vodafone Mobile Connect card driver

Reload synaptic by hitting the 'Reload' button. This will cause it to download any new packages, updates, fixes and patches. There may well be many more packages identified as needing updated on your system.

Once it's complete we can search for the Vodafone software. Select 'Search' on the synaptic menu. This will open an input dialogue box.

Add 'Vodafone' to then select 'Search'.

Right click on the 'vodafone-mobile-connect' package and select 'install'

The application will display a 'Summary' dialogue box which will inform you of the packages that will be installed. There may be several other packages that your system needs to run the betavine software. The package manager will work out all the dependancies required and try to satisfy them so that the software will run on your machine.

The software package management system will warn you that the software is not authenticated. Accept the dialogue box and install the software.

Once complete you can exit the Synaptic Software package management system.

Click on the 'Home' icon at the very top right of your screen.

The Vodafone mobile connect software is now installed on your machine. Go to the 'Internet' tab and select it with your mouse pointer. There will be a Vodafone Mobile Connect icon on the bottom tab. When you start the application follow on screen prompts to setup.

To start the appliction select the icon with your mouse.

Or you can also start the application from the command line by selection. On the Toshiba by opening a terminal window by selecting 'Terminal' in the 'Accessories' tab

In the x-terminal window type

">:~$ vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux"

Once the Vodafone Mobile Connect software starts it will show a splash screen while the software is loading. The first time you start the application it will take a while before starting. This is normal, the software will pre populate APN's user name and passwords for Vodafone SIM's

Please be aware that you will have to configure the APN settings if this is anything other than a Vodafone SIM

The first time you run the application it will attempt to identify the 'device' type you are using. e.g. what kind of USB modem, or internal modem that you have. If the application can identify the modem it will ask for confirmation.

If you are happy with the selection hit 'OK' to accept this card. If the card is not identified and you know what settings the card has, you can configure your device type here. If you do not know try searching the betavine 'Open Source' or 'Linux' forum for help.

Connect With The Application

By selecting 'connect' with the top left icon the system will connect your machine using the Wireless network.

Please ensure you have an appropriate data tarrif for your SIM card.

You can keep an eye on how much data you are using by selecting the 'Usage' tab. This data is not 100% acurate due to the way the statistics are pulled from the system.
