Software Package Setup for the Acer Aspire One

The Acer Aspire One Ultra Mobile PC comes pre-installed with a software pacakge manager client that you can use to install the software. Here you will find easy instructions on how to add the Betavine Software repository to your package management system.

To do this you can start the package manager from a graphical user interface, or from the command line. For users more familiar with the Linux operating system we recommend doing this from the command line. The Acer Aspire One uses Redhat Package Managment (RPM) system to control the adding and removing of software packages.

By doing this it will also allow you to get updates of new Software versions when they become available.

The process follows three steps:

Starting Software Package Manager from a Graphical User Interface

To allow you to use the RPM graphical user interface, run more advanced programms and give you more advanced features on your desktop you we need to activate the advanced menu settings.

To do this start a command window by pressing ALT+F2 and type the following:

$> xterm

From the xterminal we need to start the windows settings manager. Type the following:

$> xfce-setting-show

This will bring up the dialogue window for advanced desktop configuration features. Click on Desktop icon -> From 'Desktop Preferences' dialogue box select the Behaviour tab and then select the 'Show desktop menu on right click' checkbox. You can now close the application.

Adding Betavine to the repository

The easiest way to load a new repository location into your package manager is to fetch the file containing the location of the packages and save it to the package manager file directory. As before you will need to exectue two commands from a terminal window, one to navigate to the corect directory and secondly to fetch and save the file here. You will also have to issue the command with administration privillages, and provide your password to save the file here. Type the following:

$> cd /etc/yum.repos.d

$> sudo wget http://www.betavine.net/repo/rpm/betavine-AAone.repo

Starting RPM Client

To start the software package manager select with the right mouse button System -> Add/Remove Software. You will be promted for your password to start the application.

Now activate the betavine repository by selecting 'Edit' then 'Repositories' menu. This will open a Repository Manager dialogue, activate the betavine repository by clicking it's tick box. The application will retrieve software packages information.

Select the search tab from the main menu, and search for 'vodafone' in the search input field. This will display two packages, one called 'comgt' and the other called 'vodafone-mobile-connect. Select the application 'vodafone-mobile-connect'. Now apply the changes, the software will be installed onto your Netbook.

By clicking on your home icon on the bottom left to minimize all windows you should now see the Vodafone Icon called 'Mobile Connect' in the connect tab.

Betavine Mobile Connect Setup

To start the appliction select the Vodafone icon with your mouse.

Or you can also start the application from the command line . On the Acer Aspire One by opening a terminal window by selecting 'Terminal' menu option from right clicking the mouse and selecting terminal.

In the x-terminal window type:

">:~$ vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux"

Once the Vodafone Mobile Connect software starts it will show a splash screen while the software is loading. The first time you start the application it will take a while before starting. This is normal as it setups up configuration files and plugins within your home directory.

The application should display a dialogue box with the detected USB Modem. Our example shows the MD950D, you should find that the image represents the device inserted. If you find it has not been able to identify your device, try shutting the application down, re-insert the modem and leave for a 15 seconds then start again.

The software will pre populate APN's user name and passwords for Vodafone SIM's. As a user you will have to choose between 'pre-pay' and 'contract', after that the system will automatically configure itself.

Please be aware that currently you will have to configure the APN settings if this is not a Vodafone SIM.

If you are happy with the selection hit 'OK' to accept your settings.

Connect With The Application

By selecting 'connect' with the top left icon the system will connect your machine using the Wireless network.

Please ensure you have an appropriate data tarrif for your SIM card.

You can keep an eye on how much data you are using by selecting the 'Usage' tab. This data is not 100% acurate due to the way the statistics are pulled from the system.
