Huawei E220 mobile internet on eepc

Hi,

Does ANYONE have a proper working solution to get a huawei E220 mobile broadband dongle working on a brand new, clean installation, as it comes out of the box eepc 900, running on the factory onstalled Linux?

It won't work I've been looking at many replies on sites like this and have tried many things suggested...NONE work. I've reversed each thing tried that didn't work and I'm on the verge of giving up on the eepc with Linux as a machine and operating system that...well...doesn't.

There's no point in having such a small and "mobile machine" when it won;t connect to mobile internet.

Also, it won't connect to wifi either...have tried it in cafe's with fee wifi, with my PC too. My PC with Vista and Wireless connects fine...the eepc...doesn't.

On the verge of giving up on Linux as a bad job and installing Windows XP on it.

Can anyone provide a proper working solution? PLEASE?

Hmm...

There are many people on all sorts of forums saying the eepc won't connect to mobile broadband..on Linux OR XP.

It's not just the Huawei modems either.

Please can someone develop a working solution for Linux AND XP on an eepc and share it with us struggling eepc users?

Hi,
Have you checked out the guide on http://www.vodafonebetavine.net/web/linux_drivers/repository

Works for me with Huawei E172 and Vodafone UK. Try resetting the EeePC back to factory defaults first (F9 at boot) to undo any changes you've made.

Hope it helps,

Andrew

Re: vmc wont start on ubuntu 10....

andrewbird,

Hi Dazzla, It seems you have two problems, firstly VMC 2.x doesn't play nicely with the newer distros like Lucid, that's why we redesigned (and renamed!) it as BCM 3.x. You can get it over at https://forge.betavine.net/frs/?group_id=76 and that should help most lucid users. However you have a Samsung laptop and unfortunately we haven't yet written a device plugin, or even a hardware family abstraction for Samsung. It's on my list of things to see about doing, but as yet I don't have a Samsung device, and implementing the family stuff is next to impossible without. Sorry I can't be more positive. Andrew

Kit67,

Hi,I'm totally new to Linux but I did manage to get VMC 2.2 working on my BenQ S41 laptop using Ubuntu 10.04 Clicking on the VMC link didn't do any good so I had to start the VMC from terminal. I found that when I used the sudo command, VMC would start up but I couldn't connect to the internet.(sms worked ok) So I tried Sudo -i and I had no problems connecting. Here it is: sudo -i vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux Enter Password on prompt. That did it for me! I'm using a Huawei K3715 usb.

RE: Huawei E172 Linux Drivers

salsapixie,

Hi mael, there is a little hack you can use to avoid your usb modem to automatically be mounted as a cdrom device. In the file /etc/udev/rules.d/99-huawei-e220.rules you must add the following line: SUBSYSTEMS=="scsi" ATTRS{vendor}=="HUAWEI", OPTIONS+="ignore_device" and then exec: $sudo udevcontrol reload_rules next time you connect the modem it should not be detected as cdrom. Regards, Vicente. can you talk me through that bearing in mind i am not tech savvy and have only today started using linux. plain english please, no jargon!

Re: Getting vmc software running...

nherriot,

Thanks Andrew, that's a good tip! By the way, version two is out for Fedora which contains a better setup, faster start time, more USB card support, and automatic APN detection for Vodafone SIM's. version 2.0 rpm for fedora Not sure if it's build for Fedora 11, I'll check for you tomorrow. Our main site and testing is falling way behind our builds on the forge due to the new release of the Betavine web site which is almost complete! :-( ... Kind regards, Nicholas

Getting vmc software running on ...

andrew,

The vodafone-mobile-connect-1.99.17-8.noarch on Fedora 11 does not work out of the box. The reason being that Fedora 11 ships with 2.6 of python now and the vmc installs the python packages to /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/vmc. I got this working by creating a symbolic link as follows: ln -s /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/vmc /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/vmc It seems the vodafone software is compatible with 2.6 of python. I tested it on a train journey and it worked perfectly.

RE: E220 not working on Ubuntu 8.04

merodeador,

i have the VMC card driver 2.0 beta 3 on my machine, here's the download link : https://forge.betavine.net/frs/download.php/267/vodafone-mobile-connect-card-dri ver-for-linux-2.0.beta3.tar.gz once downloaded, decompress the file and install it (just double click on the *.run file and select "run" when it asks what to do with the file) after you're finished installing, plug in the huawei and run the program ( go to applications>internet>VMC card driver). it will detect your modem, and work automatically. if it doesn't, close the VMC software, open a terminal and write : sudo modprobe -r uhci_hcd it will ask for your password, type it. afterwards type sudo modprobe uhci_hcd restart the VMC card driver software, and you should be able to connect with no problem. the only thing is that (at least in my case) you have to write those commands before using the VMC software everytime you start your ubuntu. this is not a big problem but i think there must be a way to configure the program to do this automatically without having to use the modprobe commands... i'm just too newbie to know how... any ideas here?
