The Brief

Betavine, Vodafone’s mobile developer community, is offering weekly prizes to mobile developers throughout July and August in its Summer of Widgets competition.

Description

Mobile widgets are mini applications that sit on a handset and can be personalised to retrieve relevant information from the web. They provide ‘always on’ services based on the information users want to receive, and are a new touch point for how consumers use the mobile internet.

Widgets are based on web code rather than on specialist programming language, which makes it possible for both professional and amateur developers to tap into their potential.

Running from 6th July to the 30th August, the Summer of Widgets competition will offer three prizes every week to the developers who have submitted the best widgets.

Entrants will be able to submit widgets from 00.01 (BST) every Monday until midnight (BST) the following Sunday during the competition. Entries will be judged on the Monday and the winners announced at midday each Tuesday here on Betavine.

All developers submitting widgets into this competition must also submit their widgets to http://widget.vodafone.com/dev/ and select all markets for distribution.

Entry Criteria

• Entrants must be registered as a developer in the Betavine community
• Entries must comply with the Vodafone technical content policy
• Entries need to be written in English
• Submitted widgets must be using the Opera runtime for the S60 platform working on the following mobile devices - Nokia 6124, Nokia 6210, Nokia N78, Nokia N95 8gb, Nokia N95, Nokia E71, Nokia N96
• Entries must come from an individual named developer and the prize will be awarded to the individual named developer
• The IPR of entries will remain the property of the developer
• You can submit any number of Widgets into the competition each week
• You must also submit your widget to http://widget.vodafone.com/dev/ and ensure you select all markets
• Widgets entered into this competition must not already appear on the Vodafone Widget Developer Platform

Success Criteria

The judging panel, made up of Vodafone and industry experts, will be assessing the entries based on the following:

• Ease of use – how easy is it for a non-technical user to understand and benefit from?
• Creativity – how does the entry demonstrate new and exciting uses for widgets?
• Value to the potential user – how much easier does it make the user’s life and what does the widget enable them to do?

The Prizes

The best 3 widgets as selected by the judging panel each week will win a combined package of an N96 and a Samsung NC20 netbook.
