About Betavine

We provide a platform for developers to share knowledge and ideas. We also promote the creation of mobile solutions for the developing world.

Betavine's mission is to provide an open, community-oriented space that encourages creativity and innovation in mobile development. It does this in two ways. The Developer Area offers resources, competitions, app publishing facilities and more to support developers in creating the best apps they can. Betavine Social Exchange invites developers and NGOs to work together to make mobile solutions that help people in the developing world.

While Betavine is a Vodafone Group R&D initiative its scope is in no way limited to Vodafone technologies or platforms. It is an open application community where anyone may discuss, learn about and share applications for any technology platform whatsoever. It supports R&D in the broadest possible sense, based on the idea that seeding creativity in the wider mobile community will benefit everyone: developers, operators and users alike.

Developer Area

This is a place where developers can test out their apps, learn about new technologies and share ideas with others in their community.

Applications may be freely uploaded and downloaded. Users can rate the apps, giving developers valuable feedback so they can tweak their work. The newly launched Academy offers educational resources on new and established technologies. Frequent events and competitions create opportunities to meet off-line, chat about the latest technologies and hopefully come up with some amazing new apps!

Social Exchange

Conceived as a way of supporting the creation of socially conscious and sustainable apps, Social Exchange brings NGOs, community organisations and developers together to create mobile solutions for a better world. It works in a four-step process. NGOs or community organisations upload a challenge outlining a problem they think mobile can solve. The wider BSX community discusses the challenge. Then developers come up with a technological solution. Finally, BSX registered support partners help to deploy the solutions, thereby growing local mobile ecosystems.

Launched in October 2009, the pilot phase is targeted towards organisations in South Africa but users from all regions are welcome to take part.

New Betavine Release

We are pleased to announce another Betavine release.

Let me highlight two of the key changes we have made to improve the site:-

1) Maps - You can now navigate and locate Social Exchange 'Challenges' in regions and countries by using this new feature.

Why not try it out for yourself now.

2) Messaging - You can now directly message another user! These messages will be available from the "My Betavine" menu when you login to the site. You can offer to help with a challenge or help with building a solution by contacting the owner.

As always, we'd like to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think of these new features in the
